INFORMED

PSHE is integral to all parts of learning and being a positive and informed member of the world community. It has recently become a mandatory curricular area, and rightly so. PSHE should be taught in formal lessons and woven throughout the school day and extracurricular events and we strive to achieve this at Ilketshall. It is crucial for children to learn about (and have modelled to them) positive relationships and personal interactions in social situations. These are skills that need to be taught discretely as it may not be obvious to some children just by modelling. This will help them to function better in society as adults. This includes teaching about current events openly and honestly and about a variety of cultures and beliefs. This is integral to creating a less ignorant, more accepting society.

INDEPENDENT

In teaching children about relationships, current events and the world community we encourage children to think critically about the world in which they live. We encourage them to participate in discussions and reflect on their own ideas. This nurtures their independence and sense of self and it forms an integral part in children deciding on the people they wish to be.

INVESTED

The economic strand of PSHE helps children to learn about financial matters and how money is used and spent on the things we need for survival first, then for pleasure. This strand helps children understand how society and government work, including the tax system. So while this may not excite them about their future necessarily, it does provide the essential knowledge about the contribution they will make in today’s society.

INDIVIDUAL

Another part of PSHE is learning about personal care and health. We should not take for granted that children learn these things outside of school, just as we would not assume they learn about scientific theory elsewhere. Children must understand how their bodies function and how to look after them and keep healthy, both mentally and physically.

PSHE is one of the most important subjects on our curricular roster. It creates children who are knowledgeable about themselves and the world around them, yet maintaining pride in their own individuality.
