Computing at Ilketshall  

INFORMED

At Ilketshall, computing firstly teaches children the importance of online safety. The content of our teaching examines how technology can be used in a safe and effective way, while also pointing out the dangers and how these can be avoided. Children right from Reception are taught the importance of online safety and how to achieve this on whatever device they are using.

Alongside teaching how to use various pieces of equipment, we also highlight to children the positive role technology can play. We look at the many, many things that can be achieved by working with technology in a safe way. From programming and coding to research and presentations, we aim to develop an understanding of the many roles computing skills can support us with. 

We also strive to show children the wondrous way in which technology makes the wider world more accessible to all of us, from linking up with others around the world to taking guided tours using google earth, we aim to use technology to show children the wider world in which they live. 

INDEPENDENT

Our computing lessons in school teach children to be resilient with their learning. As most people have probably experienced, technology is not always the most straightforward thing it is set out to be. However, our computing lessons encourage children to be resilient in using their knowledge and skills to overcome problems they may face. 

We also bring technology into every classroom and every subject area so that children can independently use the various devices we have to develop and extend their learning in all areas. It is wonderful to see them using online and technology based methods to research historical figures, present their own written work, test their own skills and many, many more things. 

INVESTED

Computing excites children about the future and where technology will head next! Since being online and using technology is going to be a prevalent part of their future having the opportunity to explore what can be achieved using technology makes them think about how they will apply technology in their future lives. We encourage our children to see that their world is now no longer restricted to areas they can travel too as through using technology the boundaries are limitless. The ideas the children create makes us all excited about where technology will take us next. For some children at Ilketshall, computing is a passion- future games designers all need to have a real in depth understanding of computer technology. At our school we strive to support these passions to help make them become a reality. 

INDIVIDUAL

At Ilketshall we encourage children to see how technology can work for them. We allow them to research areas of interest, find out new information and test their own skills and understanding. The various programmes we use allow individuals to extend their understanding in various areas of the curriculum at their own pace, so children can learn and develop areas that are specific to their needs.  We aim to embed the use of technology in all of their learning to support children in becoming increasingly competent and confident when using technology for their learning. At the heart of this again is online safety. We teach children how to be safe when working on the internet, which then brings its own level of confidence and skill to be applied in their work.
