INFORMED

History is integral to our curriculum. It is important that we understand the past in order to make informed decisions for the future and not repeat errors. Our children, at some point in the future, will be adults with various responsibilities. They will need to use knowledge from the past to make informed decisions about the future. If children are taking an academic route into a career, it is important to have a well-rounded understanding of the world in order to make connections in their learning and understanding. Historical understanding helps us to understand where we came from and how people developed into the way we live today; both here and abroad.

INDEPENDENT

As well as learning the facts and information from throughout history, we also encourage children to develop the skills of an historian. In doing so we encourage children to be independent in their learning about the past; to be curious and ask their own questions; to be creative in finding ways to investigate and explore both primary and secondary sources of information and to think critically about the evidence they are investigating.

INVESTED

For our children to lead the way into the future, it is important to learn about what has happened in the past. It gives them a strong sense of what has been changed and from this they can look ahead at the potential for change moving forward. As part of the curriculum, they learn about inspirational key figures from the past and they examine different time periods, from exploring the dinosaurs in Early Years to critically analysing  the slave trade in Year 6. From this they develop an understanding of how change is achieved.

INDIVIDUAL

The past can teach us many things about what shapes a positive citizen in today’s world. History teaches us the value of listening and respecting other viewpoints, the importance of valuing difference and it shows us how key figures have succeeded by being brave and individual in their ideas. These positive role models are key to children’s awareness of the people they are looking to become.
