INFORMED
Through our teaching of Art we introduce children to the work of famous artists and periods of art and we examine pieces from around the world. For example, children learnt about Vincent Van Gogh whilst being taught about faces and facial features. We look at the techniques used, the various art forms and also the inspiration behind such famous pieces. We discuss why such techniques are used and the effects it creates. This then forms a starting point for children to explore themselves. Through our curriculum at Ilketshall children have the opportunity to become well rounded artists by being exposed to a variety of artistic impressions and techniques such as: statues, landscapes, portraits and many more!
INDEPENDENT
At Ilketshall, Art gives children the opportunity to express their creativity more so than in other subjects because Art, as a subject, is underpinned with creativity! Children are given opportunities to experiment using the same tools and techniques of famous artists and in doing so can explore how they would use these ideas. We use examples of art as starting points from which children can then be independent in experimenting. The results are amazing! One class recently studied the work of Yayoi Kusama and created some beautiful flower sculptures inspired by the artist themselves. We also look closely at our work and the work of others to offer our own critique of pieces.
INVESTED
Being given the opportunity to experience ideas, methods and techniques first hand creates a buzz of excitement in any classroom. Children at Ilketshall are offered many different opportunities to explore art both indoors and out. They experiment with colour, texture, technique and form, using their own ideas and the ideas of famous artists and periods of art. This allows them to see the potential their own ideas have. Being given the freedom to explore art within its different forms creates children who are keen to contribute to their learning and take it one step further to then create their own pieces based on what they have learnt.
INDIVIDUAL
As there is no right or wrong in Art we encourage every child to express themselves freely and to use their own ideas and skills. This develops their confidence in using different mediums and it teaches them to value difference, as no two pieces of artwork should ever or will ever be the same. We celebrate differences in Art by sharing pieces in our school through displays around the corridors, recognising work in celebration assemblies and sharing with families via our online platform ‘seesaw’. This allows children to feel proud of something they have created and teaches the importance of being unique.
